Item Groups (Overview)

Group Codes are for pools of similar hire items that are reasonably identical and are interchangeable. Only singular hire items can be added to a group. Item Group (Master Records) allow certain attributes to be applied across all of the items within the group.

Grouping is particularly useful for future bookings where the exact Item Code to be hired is unknown, in which case you can just add a Group Code to the booking, and then choose the specific Item Code at the time of dispatching (i.e. after populating the Hired From date/time).

Take the example of fork lift machinery.  If there were 10 of exactly the same make/model of forklift, we would set the forklifts up as 10 separate singular items so that we can track the full details of each forklift, i.e. purchase price, hires and income, service and repair costs and so on.  Each forklift could have an Item Code as FL1, FL2, FL3.... FL10.  However we can give all of these forklifts the same Group Code of FL, and just select the FL group code when booking in advance.
